RPL Launches Debut of Northstar Digital Literacy Online Learning

Northstar Digital Literacy Online Learning is a free service offered to patrons of the Reading Public Library. As our work and social lives continue to develop online, many are falling behind with the skills required to navigate this digital landscape. The Library is dedicated to providing online education, resources, and opportunities to bridge the digital divide and create full and equitable access to workforce development, government and financial services, healthcare, lifelong learning, entertainment, and social activities.

Twelve different topics are available that are divided into three general areas: Essential Computer Skills (Basic Computer Skills, Internet Basics, Using Email, Windows 10 and 11, and Mac OS), Essential Software Skills (Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, and Google Docs), and Using Technology in Daily Life (Social Media, Information Literacy, Career Search Skills, Accessing Telehealth Appointments, Supporting K-12 Distance Learning, and Your Digital Footprint). Each topic is approximately two hours in length and contains 10-18 lessons.

Northstar continues to develop additional lessons, most of which are also available in Latin American Spanish.

Learners may follow the self-guided lessons online or in the library, or they may register for instructor-led classes available in the Main Library. Learners will receive a Northstar Digital Literacy Certificate when they successfully complete an assessment in a proctored setting at the Main Library, Northeast Branch, or Southeast Branch. Certificates provide an important credential for employment, as even entry-level jobs increasingly require basic computer skills. Certificates also demonstrate the ability to use social media and online information thoughtfully.

Northstar Digital Literacy Online Learning is helping to develop the right skills for patrons to use the internet effectively, from operating a computer, to creating an email account, to filling out job applications and scheduling telehealth appointments, all within a safe and healthy digital environment.
