Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer
Recommended by Laura C.
Drawing on her life as an indigenous scientist, and as a woman, Kimmerer shows how other living beings―asters and goldenrod, strawberries and squash, salamanders, algae, and sweetgrass―offer us gifts and lessons, even if we’ve forgotten how to hear their voices. In reflections that range from the creation of Turtle Island to the forces that threaten its flourishing today, she circles toward a central argument: that the awakening of ecological consciousness requires the acknowledgment and celebration of our reciprocal relationship with the rest of the living world. For only when we can hear the languages of other beings will we be capable of understanding the generosity of the earth, and learn to give our own gifts in return. (Sourced from the publisher.)

Lady Tan’s Circle of Women by Lisa See
Recommended by Charlene D.E.
Charlene says, “Shoutout to Northeast Branch for having this book. A lot of times I see popularity for historical novels set in England/Scotland circa medieval period or lots of WWII time period novels. See’s novel about Lady Tan (a medical doctor 15th century China) is riveting. The level of history mixed with story draws you in as if you have known all about that culture and time period your whole life while simultaneously peeking curiosity of what it was like to exist as female in a time where “for every 2 women who survived child birth, 10 would die,” (See, 2023) a warning given to Lady Tan while study medicine with her grandmother. If it wasn’t for chasing around a little one, I would have had it finished the first night it was checked out.”
