This STEAM Thursday come and learn about the history of audio recording and how people figured out ways to capture sounds! We will be doing experiments to test how sound travels and getting to listen to archival recordings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries!

During this two hour event, tweens age 10-14 read a graphic novel aloud together and then eat pizza to celebrate! Join us on October 1st to read Miles Morales: Shock Waves by Justin A. Reynolds.
“Miles Morales is a normal kid who happens to juggle school at Brooklyn Visions Academy while swinging through the streets of Brooklyn as Spider-Man. After a disastrous earthquake strikes his mother’s birthplace of Puerto Rico, Miles springs into action to help set up a fundraiser for the devastated island. But when a new student’s father goes missing, Miles begins to make connections between the disappearance and a giant corporation sponsoring Miles’ fundraiser. Who is behind the disappearance, and how does that relate to Spider-Man?”

Audio through the Ages, part 2, will continue our journey through the history of audio technology and how people listened to music after vinyl was invented. We will make our own speaker using music supplies, and get hands experience with different type of audio technology from over the decades.

Join us on October 9th for a building challenge inspired by the floating gardens, chinampas, that the Aztec civilization used around the area that is now Mexico City! All building materials will be provided, so just bring yourself! NOTE: We will be using hot glue, so please make sure to provide adult support and supervision for children under 9, as they will not be able to participate without an adult present.

Celebrate the season with our annual Halloween Bash! The Reading Philharmonic Orchestra will provide a free concert on the main floor while children and families can enjoy hands-on crafts, snacks and drinks, and family-friendly trick-or-treating in Youth Services. Costumes are highly encouraged, and prizes will be awarded to both children and tweens/teens for most creative, cutest, and spookiest.
