The Reading Library Company… a small organization with a big mission.
Founded more than 250 years ago to provide the fledgling city with an accessible book collection, the Company’s efforts led to the creation of Reading Public Library. The Company has evolved over its existence but remains vital today. It is responsible for electing one-third of the 15-member Board of Trustees who oversee the operation of the Main Library in downtown Reading and the three branches in the Northeast, Northwest, and Southeast areas of Reading.
The Company holds a formal meeting once a year in November to put forth candidates to become new or returning members of the Board of Trustees. The five Trustees elected by the Company, along with five chosen by the City of Reading and five by the County of Berks, become vocal advocates and decision-makers for the Library, one of the oldest book-lending institutions in the nation.
And this is where you, a city or county resident, can play an important role. We’re looking for community-spirited volunteers to become new shareholders in the Reading Library Company. A share earns the right to take part in the selection process and vote for the five Trustees we elect. The duties of a Company shareholder are simple. Attend our annual November meeting (it usually lasts about an hour) and pay our annual dues of $1.00.
